Your perfect Laundry Room
I am honestly not sure which room works harder in your house, your Kitchen or your Laundry Room. We are currently in the soggy towel season here in New England where our Laundry Room is always working hard to prep for the next day of swimming and sun. Bottom line is that when both spaces are designed well and customized to your needs, they can be efficient and actually a little enjoyable. Dare I say laundry is enjoyable?!
We have designed all different kinds of Laundry Rooms over the years. First Floor, Second Floor, Third Floor - even one very glamorous Basement Laundry Room. We have been asked to make spaces for SIX washers and dryers in a client’s summer home so she could handle all the sandy towels. We have been huge advocates for moving Laundry Rooms to the Second Floor - always reminding people that dirty laundry typically originates on the Second Floor, and clean folded laundry lives on the Second Floor, so why not the Laundry Room itself?! Some of our clients have Laundry on each floor of their house, so that smelly sports equipment can be washed immediately on entry and never be brought all the way into a house. Making a life designed for you is always our end goal.
Above is our most recently photographed Laundry Room. This room was actually a storage room for years. It had no windows and no closets, so we had always toyed with different potential uses for the space. Once the client started talking about how cramped her Mudroom was it was a no-brainer to scoop the Laundry Room out from the dual use space and bring it upstairs to the window-less room,. By adding a solar tube we were able to get a decent amount of natural light, and recessed solve the rest of the problem. This room is actually at the end of a long hallway, and the view from the hall was quite important. By selecting an eye catching wallpaper, we were able to beautify the view from the hall. Adding a hefty backsplash allowed us a buffer so when clothes are being hand washed in the sink, the wallpaper still stays pristine. Adding retractable hanging racks was another new request, and it is a detail we all love.
This Laundry Room shown above is attached to a client’s Mudroom. It is a large space with ample room for both spaces to co-exist without feeling cramped. The overall vibe of the space is earthy, from the natural slate on the floor to the organic subway tiles and exposed wood shelves. By providing a large sink in the space, this area becomes a great place to hand wash clothing, and also a great spot for washing dirty hands when the kids come in from outside caked in mud. The counter space in here is ample, so having a clear spot for folding and sorting is never an issue.
The Laundry Room that is shown above, is a upstairs Laundry Room that lives between a series of bedrooms. It is a work horse for sure, and we made it as fun as possible with wallpaper on the ceiling and a fun backsplash.
I know we say it all the time, but having home designed for your specific needs and wants is always a favorite luxury. Let us know if we can help you make your dream home your reality.
Together we create.
