KT2’s Favorite Kitchen Storage Hacks:

Designing Kitchens is one of the most rewarding rooms to customize for our clients. Whether we are working on a Modern Farmhouse, Mountain Home, Coastal Escape or Primary Residence, a well designed Kitchen makes your days function more smoothly on all fronts. Measuring your favorite pantry items, finding a place for the glasses near the sink, counting all your cookie sheets and making sure you have enough slots for them - a custom Kitchen means that you get to make it a organized space that really works for your family. We love helping our clients through the process. We also love sharing a few tried and true storage hacks that let you make every last inch of Kitchen count. Below is a preview of some of our favorite hacks.

Hack 1 - Paper Towel Storage. People feel very polarized about paper towel storage. As your design team, we can get behind many different solutions. One of our most popular solutions pictured below is of a drawer that has an inset dowel so you can store your paper towels at counter height, and still have them blend seamlessly with your lower cabinets. An added bonus is that the drawers itself beocme a logical location to store dish towels.

Hack 2 - Step Up. Another one of our favorite elements of your custom Kitchen design has to do with maximizing all available space. Anybody who is under 6’ can understand that upper cabinets can become impossible to reach without assistance. We recently found this little trick of adding a pull out peg that you can stand so you can easily access the higher cabinets. No need to pull over a chair or find a step stool. You just pull out the peg, step up, and push the peg back in when you are done. And your clean lined Kitchen is none the wiser.

Hack 3 - Spices. Having spices organized and at the ready makes cooking and baking that much more efficient. The two options for spice storage are in a cabinet on tiers, or in a customized drawer. We are huge advocates of the customized drawer as it allows everything to be easy to reach and all labels and bottles are easily legible.

Hack 4 - Dish Drains. Nothing irks us more than a Kitchen designed for what you wish your life looked like, verses what your life actually looks like. If you don’t tell us about your dish drain habits at the beginning of a project, then we can’t help you come up with the best solution. If you are an avid dish drain user (we are!) - we love integrating this drain board into the countertop material itself. You never again have to look at a rubber matte and a rusting rack. You never have to shove them under the sink when you are getting ready for company. The built-in dish drain is the gift that keeps on giving.

So as I write this list I realize that the hacks are kind of endless when you are talking custom Kitchen design. We once designed an island for a client who was an avid baker and we made four small cabinets at each corner of the island to store her huge collection of sprinkles. So tell us about your life.
